Winter Safety Awareness Week

Winter Safety Awareness Week is November 16–22, 2025. FCEM&HS encourages residents to take time now to prepare for winter weather hazards, including snow, ice, blizzards, freezing rain, and flooding, as well as the occasional severe thunderstorms or tornadoes that can occur during the colder months.

Franklin County Hazards - Tornadoes

Tornadoes are violently rotating columns of air that extend from a thunderstorm to the ground. Tornadoes can destroy buildings, flip cars, and create deadly flying debris. Tornadoes can happen at anytime, anywhere and at anytime of the year.

Franklin County Hazards - Flooding

Flooding occurs when water accumulates on normally dry land, often due to heavy rains, rapid snowmelt, or infrastructure failures like dam or levee breaches. Flooding can occur suddenly or gradually and cause significant damage.  Flooding is the most frequent natural disaster and pose the greatest risk in Franklin County, with flash floods being particularly dangerous due to their swift onset and destructive force.
