COLUMBUS – Franklin County Emergency Management and Homeland Security (FCEM&HS) invites the community to join millions of people across the country in the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut Earthquake Drill on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 10:16 a.m. by practicing the life-saving action: "Drop, Cover, and Hold On"

Earthquakes can happen anywhere—at home, at work, or while traveling. Knowing how to respond quickly is critical to staying safe. The ShakeOut Drill provides an opportunity for individuals, families, schools, and businesses to rehearse protective actions and strengthen preparedness efforts.

The recommended safety steps during an earthquake are:

    • Drop to the ground.
    • Cover yourself under a sturdy table or desk, protecting your head and neck.
    • Hold On until the shaking stops.

"Earthquakes are unpredictable, but our response doesn’t have to be," said Jeffrey J. Young, Director of Franklin County Emergency Management & Homeland Security. "Preparedness begins with practice and the ShakeOut Drill is a simple way for every resident to build the skills needed to stay safe during an earthquake."
